Is Belle Knox’s Porn Career a Form of Empowerment?

Last month, pole fitness instructor, Scarlett DeVine, shared how her job as an exotic dancer led her to a love affair with the pole that left her feeling “much more confident and empowered” than she was when she started. In “My Love Affair With Pole Dancing” DeVine says, “My relationship with pole transformed my relationship with myself… I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin.”

This month, a Duke University student confessed that she, too, felt empowered by her work in the adult entertainment industry, but she’s taken it a step further than acrobatics on a brass pole. Belle Knox (not her real name) has been working in porn to pay for her college tuition at the prestigious and pricey Duke University. She was outed by a classmate and subsequently threatened with death once it was known that porn was the way Knox chose to keep Sallie Mae off her ass and earn a debt-free college degree. The fact that millions of people consume porn daily hasn’t stopped folks from reaching deep down into their bag of judgment to declare there is no way that Knox could or should feel empowered by what she’s doing, even though Knox herself has stated that her experience with porn “has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering.” But you know once people make up their minds about something being “bad” it’s just “bad” and no amount of logic or even the person at the center of it all telling the world how she feels can change things, because after all, there is a soul at stake here, right?

“You want to see me naked. And then you want to judge me for letting you see me naked.” – Belle Knox

Throughout this controversy, Knox has become somewhat of a media darling, making the rounds from one outlet to the next to show the world that she will not be bullied or shamed because of what she does. She shows no hesitance in pointing out the hypocrisy in condemning the porn actor while turning a blind eye to the porn consumer. But what does Knox really hope to gain from her nouveau celebrity status? If you said that she wants to be the new face of feminism, give yourself a pat on the back. When asked in a Playboy interview what kind of voice within the industry she would like to be, Knox responded, “I want society to recognize that sex work is a legitimate profession, meaning equal protection under the law and freedom from discrimination within hiring practices. I also want society to recognize that there’s humanity behind the billion-dollar industry that it consumes every day. I think the industry needs a feminist advocate as well. There are a lot of anti-porn feminists who try to speak out against exploitation in the industry, but we need somebody who can advocate for women while standing up for our right to sexual autonomy. Because so many women absolutely love the porn industry.”

Well there you have it.
