Client List: Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Bow Wow, Trey Songz, Big Sean, and Nas—just to name a few
April Roomet, a blonde bombshell standing at about six feet tall, is a power player in the world of hip-hop fashion. You may remember her from the short-lived reality series, E!’s Candy Girls, where she was dubbed the “OG of the game.” Her client list is expansive, so you are sure to have seen her work.
According to the bio on her website, April’s love of style began at The Gallery—an underground mall in Philadelphia where she worked as a teen. It wasn’t until she set foot in front of the camera that her life behind the camera would begin. In addition to working at the mall, April also modeled. It was through modeling that she met a stylist who took notice of April’s personal style and talked her into working collaboratively.
Fashion lovers of Instagram follow April not only for the behind-the-scenes footage of shows and music videos, but for a peek into the life of a busy celebrity stylist. We also love her style inspiration posts, fun hashtags (#black&whitejawn), her love for everything gold, her hometown, and her gorgeous son, whom she shares with model Tyson Beckford.
April recently stepped back in front of the camera, making a cameo in the music video for client Trey Songz’s new single “Foreign.”
April is most definitely an OG in the game who does not seem to be retiring her jersey anytime soon. She is one to admire and learn from.
Personal Note: I once had an opportunity to ask April how to start my own path to styling, so I’ve decided to pass along the gems she shared with me. April was very straightforward (common for the Aries that we are), for which I was most grateful. She told me to make friends with models, photographers and boutiques; study those who came before me; and make sure that my credit was excellent. I thought the last tidbit was the most profound; so many people glaze over the importance of having your own credit as a stylist.
