UR Traveler: U.S. Architecture You’ll Want to See Now

Think you have to travel overseas to see amazing architecture? Not so. The U.S. has some of the world’s most amazingly unique and beautifully constructed buildings in the world. If you’re an architecture buff, you’ll definitely want to add one or all of these sites to your “places to hit up” list.

basket building

Basket Building – Newark, OH

Located in Newark, Ohio, the headquarters of the Longaberger brand serves as a local landmark and prime example of novelty architecture. The seven-story, 180,000-square-foot building opened in 1997. The basket handles are close to 150 tons in weight and can be heated during cold weather to prevent ice damage.

chapel in holy rock

Chapel of the Holy Cross – Sedona, AZ

This divine building was constructed in 18 months at a cost of $300,000 and finished in 1956. It sits in the heart of Coconino National Forest, located in Sedona. Arizonans voted the chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona in 2007.

Dome House – Pensacola, FL

It doesn’t take much to persuade someone to live in a warm climate surrounded by palm trees. Dome of a Home is an amazing space that spans 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor greatness. Not only is the shape unique, but it’s also natural-disaster friendly. Its round shape allows water and wind to flow or pass around it.

air-force academy cadet chapel

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel – Colorado Springs, CO

Just entering this building will make you call on a higher power. This 52-year-old academy located in Colorado Springs is 150 feet tall and has a granite stairway with steel railings. It was specifically designed to house three distinct worship areas under one roof.

fallwater house

Fallingwater or Kaufmann Residence – Fayette County, PA

Call it whatever you’d like, but there are way too many words to describe this unique home. If you live in the northeast or mid-Atlantic, hop in your car and head to Fayette County, PA, by way of the Allegheny Mountains. Frank Lloyd Wright, renowned architect, was given a chance to step back on the scene with this project. Japanese architecture was a major influence on the construction of this brick beauty.

disney concert hall

Walt Disney Concert Hall – Los Angeles, CA

Disney’s enchantment spilled into real life when this concert hall was constructed. Disney’s widow, Lillian, gave a gift of $500 million in 1987 to build a venue of performances as a gift to the residents of Los Angeles. The gesture was also a tributary symbol of her creative husband’s devotion to the arts and to the city.
